Racing Wheels

Racing wheels have two things on their mind, weight and speed. They want as little of the first as they can get away with, and they want to handle as much of the second as their cars can give them. That’s why racing wheels are an entirely different category than other wheels. You can get wheels for a fast car, but even then you may not be getting racing wheels.

You see, racing wheels are designed to be minimalists when it comes to the materials used. The lightest of the light are magnesium alloy wheels, but these wheels are so restricted by most governments that you aren’t likely to be able to get a set to put on a street car. They are flammable, although not likely to catch fire at road speeds. But if they did catch fire, they’d burn right through the pavement with a flame temperature of over 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

The step “down” from ultra flammable and semi legal racing wheels is to aluminum alloy rims. These wheels feature a weight that’s almost as light as magnesium alloys, without all the messiness of thermal reactivity with water, and without the government restrictions. Aluminum alloy is so popular that it spread from racing wheels to encompass the vast majority of the wheels on the market today.
